Russell has 35 years experience in the upstream oil and gas business. Graduating from Imperial College, London in mechanical engineering, he joined Philips Petroleum to work in the US and Norway before moving to Kerr McGee where he ran their businesses in the UK and Middle East, Lasmo Plc North Sea where he was Managing Director and then Bitech Petroleum as CEO, building a producing company in Russia. Latterly he helped build up Intrepid Energy, a private UK upstream business sold for over $1 billion in 2004; and he was CEO of AIM-listed Forum Energy, an oil, gas and coal energy company in the Philippines.
